Thanks to an HTSD Education Foundation grant, teachers leave a legacy of reading and learning behind when they retire.

Ten well-loved teachers and three administrators retired from the School District of Haverford Township this June, but the legacy of learning these devoted educators leave behind will not soon be forgotten.

To show its gratitude to these teachers, the Haverford Township School District Education Foundation will continue its tradition of placing a book of each retiree’s choice in one of the school libraries.  Administrators Norb Paga, high school assistant principal Rich Kline, and Rick Henny retired along with teachers Tomi Mathis, Myra Millrood, Kate deRiel, Karen Penn, Joan Bortnicker, Judy Leib, Joy Tolar, Mary Ellen Malessa, Carol Dilworth and Bill Cobb

This year bus driver Robert Ruff, reading tutor Sandy Goldenberg and administrative assistant Linda Glancey have retired and will be remembered with a book in the library of their choosing.

A bookplate inside the front cover tells every child who checks out one of these books just how special the book is as well as the person to whom it is dedicated.  This “Legacy Book Project” is organized and funded by a special grant from the Education Foundation.  School librarians across the district are integral in helping the retirees choose their book. This year, the choices included six picture books, four works of fiction non-fiction books as well as picture books and a biography.

“This is a great program,” Sue Kratzinger, middle school librarian said. “Our students will continue to learn and grow when they read these carefully chosen books, and it is always great to have more books in the library!”  The books are often favorites of the retirees or reflect the subject they taught or an important part of their lives.   Art teacher Tomi Mathis asked for a children’s book about her favorite artist Georgia O’Keeffe.
